In 1970, Pandit Varadaraj Iyengar started the country’s first ever Sanskrit newspaper with a will of popularizing & retaining the language. It has been functional past 50 years. Initially 1000 issue were published. Eventually issue had been increased to more than 3500. Initially Sri Iyengar himself used to organize the mold nails & print. Sudharma stood functional even at the time of emergency in the country. The attempt of Varadaraja Iyengar to initialize the Sanskrit news in Akashavani is memorable. At present the newspaper is being published all over the country and is reaching the readers through postal media. Editor K V Sampat Kumar and his wife Vijayalakshmi are running the paper efficiently. With the aid of modern technology even online issue is being published and it is reaching nearly 1.25 lakh people worldwide. Apart from the newspaper it has pioneer in uplifting Sanskrit language in many fields. Sudharma also organised the first ‘Akhila Bharata Samskruta Sammelana’, Samskruta book fare.
